What is section 609?
Section 609 is a law that passed in the US in 2014. It is illegal for employers to request access to your Facebook or other social media accounts without your permission.
The law is often referred to as the Social Media Privacy Act, which is meant to prevent employers from accessing their employees' private information.
Many companies have implemented this law to protect their employees from potential privacy violations.
Under section 609, you have the right to request:
- All of the information in your consumer credit files.
- The source of that information.
- Each person that has accessed your credit report within the past two years (unless it was to complete an investigation).
- Businesses that have made soft inquiries within the past year.
Contrary to what some might think, section 609 does not:
Require credit bureaus to provide proof of your accounts.
The Fair Credit Reporting Act gives you the right to dispute information on your credit report. Suppose an item of disputed accuracy can't be verified or confirmed. In that case, it will simply disappear from whatever source provided this data-- usually a loans provider like banks and lending institutions compiled over time through various methods such as consumer reporting agencies (CRAs). This law also provides specific individuals with more detailed descriptions of how they may act against any perceived inaccuracies found within their reports by contacting each CRA directly. However, there are some cases where these organizations might refuse requests made under FCRA guidelines. If deemed "illegible."
